Excused were Terry Butler, Shae' Singer and Stan Hajenga. Staff present: Kathleen Strickland, Chief Deputy City Clerk Saturday Market manager's present: David Powers, Allegheny Meadows Saturday Market The board determined that the deadline for submittal for new artisan applicants for the 2006 market will be February 1, 2006. Portfolios will be reviewed Feb. 15, 2005. Staff relayed that the $100. Deposit for sales tax has been eliminated. Staff e- mailed Maggie for the checl(book in order to place an ad regarding the 2006 applications. Staffalso e-mailed all applicants from 2005 to apply. There were about 8 that did not respond. John said he is not concerned because those that did not reply can apply under the new application and everyone was notified equally. David and Allegheny review the applications. Six jewelers were pulled out and their work was reviewed by the CCLC and managers. Those were JoAnn Walpole, Cheryl Bach, Katie Kensington, Rebecca Burke, Kathryn Penn and Sandy Helt. David pointed out that the objection of the market is to select artisans that make their product well, such as Cathleen Crenshaw who is a silver smith. Another example was Missen Brucker, who fires and makes her own glass beads. Conclusions: John pointed out that JoAnn was involved with the market when it was in the park and he suggested that she be selected for that reason. Allegheny pointed out that JoAnn's portfolio and improved market involvement over last year warrant her being in the market. Sandy Helt was selected with the condition that 50% of her product needs to be non-jewelry. COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF DECEMBER 21~ 2005 Kathryn Penn and Rebecca Burke were selected. Cheryl Bach requested a ½ booth. The selection committee requested that additional photographs be provided of the artisan's work and that her portfolio be reviewed on February. Katie Kensington's application was also deferred until February. Katie indicated that she might need off two months through the summer. Mark said the application needs to indicate that there might be a need to assess vendors. Staff will make that amendment to the application. Don pointed out that the market needs some kind of financial cushion. The market needs a reserve for emergencies. Cooking demonstrations: Staffpointed out that during the summer the demonstrations were not supported well by the restaurants. They were advertised but some of the chef's never showed up. Staff also said that the best place for the cooking demonstration is at the comer of Hopkins and Hunter but the fire marshal said that area is a fire lane and no chairs can be set up at that site. Allegheny suggested that the food demonstration be moved from the north end of Conner Park to the south. Tents and chairs could be set up for patrons to use to get out of the sun. Musicians could also play at that spot if necessary. Bill said the cooking demonstration might work at that spot because you could see the tents from the intersection of Hopkins and Hunter. That would also comply with the fire marshal. Bill pointed out that maybe we need someone to schedule the cooking demonstrations for free advertising. Mark suggested that a local TV station could sponsor the cooking demonstrations. Bill said maybe we need a better PA system and a mirror as a back drop to improve the cooking demonstrations. 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF DECEMBER 21~ 2005 Bill suggested that staff contact Lance Gilliam; the new owner of the Cooking School of Aspen or his manager John Klonowski to see if they would be willing to come to the next meeting to discuss the cooking demonstrations. Bill also said that the Catholic Church needs contacted to propose giving them the 60 chairs to be stored in their basement and used 15 times a year. The CCLC also determined that a web site is not necessary. Don said he would talk to Lisa from the chamber to do a link for the market application. MOTION: Bill moved to adjourn; second by Don. All in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m. Kathleen J. Strickland, Chief Deputy City Clerk
