HomeMy WebLinkAboutminutes.council.19610418 Aspen, Colorado Meeting of the Board of the Fire District and the City Council April 18, 1961 The Board of the Fire DistriCt and the City Council met informally on Tuesday, April 18, at 7:30 PM. The Board members present were Albert Bishop, Chairman, Hod Nicholson, Warren Conner and Sam Stapleton. The newly appointed member, Bob Kopp was unable to attend. Present also were Mayor Garfish, and Councilmen James, Braun and Beyer, Mr. Anderson was out of town. Also present, City Attorney Stewart and Fire Chief Clymer. Warren Conner reported that the Fire District has $12,500.00 in Pitkin County Bank at 3% as a Bond Retirement Fund, plus about $2,400.00. He said the book~ are up to date, and that they are being audited, by Dan Handy, and a report will be made available to the public, Stewart Attorney/referred to the Fire Station and the advisability of~the meeting with Council, so that some form of agreement could be reached covering division of ex- penses. He said any agreement should cover the City as an entity, and the outlying area, and it should include the responsibility of the District to each area. He suggested including the following: 1. Protection - distribution of vehicles. 2. Fire Station - title is in City - Fire District has put up $3,500.00 in cash. 3. Need for new truck to replace old one in about two years. Discussed - the question of Fire District leasing the Fire Station for a small rental and assuming cost of maintenance and utilities. This is~.a matter for Council consideration. Mention was made of a current lease to run until 1969 and this will be followed up. Also discussed - 24 hour fire call service now being handled by the Hotel 3erome at a cost to the City of $240.00 a month. Zeke Clymer, Fire Chief, suggested that the Board contemplate what equipmeBt will be required next. He favored the Fire District maintaining the Station, and spoke of the need for a paint job. Mr. Stewart suggested that the Board and Mr. Clymer prepare a proposal to present to Council. Councilman Beyer asked if Clymer and a Councilman should attend the Board meetings. Mayor Garfish appointed Beyer as liaison member for Council, and Clymer said he w~uld like to be~ present to present his problems. It was announced that Mr. Stewart is setting up election for the Fire District Board members for the second Tuesday in August. He said the Board should meet at least once a month. Discussed - setting aside funds for new equipment. Filing a map of the Fire lstrlct with the City Clerk. Setting up budget. Dave Stapleton was present and inquired about additional hose for the fire truck. He said the Mountain States Inspection Bureau sets the fire premium rates and the rates for the adjacent area are higher than those within the corporate limits of the City. He is working to bring all the area between the east and west bridges, the motntain and the river under one rate, and this can be done if the fire hose is extended to 1000 ft. which means purchasing about 300 ft. of 2½ inch hose. Mr. Clymer will determine just how much more hose is required and inform the Board. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 PM. R P F
