Durand in 1885. Durand came to Aspen in 1830 and established liiniself as a businessman with a grocery store located in :i + crude log cabin on the corner of Galena and Cooper. He soon entered into partnership with Peter Lrix who had come to .- , Aspen in the spring of 1881 and started a hardzvare store. Together, they founded Durand and Liu Hard,r'are zrhich became the first occupants of i' , ' this building. The hardware store was on the first floor. They advertised a . complete line of agricultural implements. Additional stock was kept on the second Eoor and in a nearby warehouse. Reports circulated that the com- 40 pany hoa.sted an incredible ,$50,000 worth of saleable goods. The entire third floor of the building; clone in magnificent blue tile, u·as given to the Masonic Hall. The tile remains, a reminder of earlier days. Iii 1887, the business was sold to Jones and King, merchants and recent . arrivals from Pitkin, where King hadserved as mayor. King did not reside in Aspen for long and by 1890 the enterprise was just A. E. Jones, Iiardware. Then, two years later, Jones .sold out to Morrell in u hat was claimed to be the largest merehantile deal yet recorded in Aspen. Morrell Hardware remained in businCE here for a decade, closing their doors around the turn of the century. The next tenant to hang up their sign was Jewett s Grocery Store. But, as Aspen's population diminished 1 1 ·1 1· after the first World War, Jewetts disant:carred too. Tne outicing was used , ' : as a stable for a few years and then stood empty. In keeping with the sign on its south face, the large three-story brick ahead, on the comer of Galina and Cooper Streets, is best kno<vn to Aspen residents as the Independence. I-lowever, trom tne time it was built in 1839, until Mrs. Pacpcke changed the name to the Prince Albert Hotel in the 1940's, it was called the Brown & Hoag Block after its builders, A. B. When Burt agreed with William Hoag, a carpenter, to build a new business block, Hcag bought a half interest in the site for the outrageous sum of $10,000. Fol- lowing the Victorian trends for design, plans for the building prescribed a square structure with small rectangular windows. TO: Historic Preservation Committee FROM: Planning Office (Joe Wells) RE: Historic Designation of Eagle's Building DATE: May 23, 1978 The Planning Office has received a written request for historic designation from Andre Ulrych, owner of the Eagle's Building. Having searched the files at length, I have been unable to locate documentation and research specifically on the Eagles Building. Therefore the enclosed draft resolution is structured on the basis of the guidelines adopted by Council for Historic Designation (Article IX). If the Committee feels that this is unacceptable some additional time will be needed to carry out the f, documentation. ..' l , . l. L.. ':-/ b.
