RESOLUTION NO. 162
Series of 2000
WHEREAS, Francis Whitaker was instrumental in passage of the
first Aspen open space sales tax in 1970; and
WHEREAS, Whitaker was a City Councilmember from January
1970 to June 1973 and served on the Board of Adjustment from 1977 to
1983, and
WHEREAS, Whitaker was one of the foremost master blacksmiths
both as a practitioner and a teacher in the United States, and fellow
blacksmiths credit Francis as being singularly responsible for reviving the
art of blacksmithing in this country, and his forge was located adjacent to
this property; and
WHEREAS, Whitaker was named a National Heritage fellow in
1997 by the National Endowment for the Arts; and
WHEREAS, Whitaker was a long time member of the Aspen Valley
Land Trust and Parks Association Board where he championed
conservation and open space preservation issues, and
WHEREAS, Whitaker negotiated the original lease of the Bass
parcel as a public park over 25 years ago, and always promoted the
purchase of the property by the city, and participated in landscaping the
park.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ASPEN HEREBY RESOLVES ~ YU \(I
That the property located at the southwest corner of MLr ~v\Q \~'-
Hopkins formerly known as "Bass Park" is renamed "Francis Whitaker
Park".

Hopkins formerly known as "Bass Park" is renamed "Francis Whitaker
Park".
